Fifty Shades of Boring...

I admit, I fell prey to all the hype surrounding the Fifty Shades of Grey series and eagerly and excitedly ordered the trilogy post-haste.  I was keyed up to dig into this naughty piece of fiction that promised to tantalize and delight.

A few chapters in, I was already disappointed.  Maybe it’s my “advanced” age of 38 but a story about a couple of twenty-somethings didn’t appeal to me.  At the tender age of 27, Christian Grey is barely what I would call a man.  I was hoping for characters with more depth and life experience.  A somewhat older man in his late 30’s or early 40’s, sexy in that rugged Matthew McConaghey way with the charm and talent of Hugh Jackman mixed with the bad boy in Colin Farrell would have really piqued my interest.  While I was reading I kept picturing Christian Grey as a “pretty boy”, almost child-like, too perfect.  Just not my type.

I don’t profess to be a great writer nor do I have any editorial qualifications, but even more disappointing than the characters was the sub-standard writing.  By book three I was begging for the story to end so that I didn’t have to read the same things over and over and over again.  Anastasia’s sub-conscious and inner goddess grated on my nerves and added nothing to the story.  The glaring editing mistakes really irked me and it was all I could do not to get out my red pen and mark up the books and mail them to the publisher!

I won’t ruin the story and if these books got your motor running then good for you!  Maybe it’s my age and where I’m at in my life, but I found these books to be trashy, and not in a good way.

What other steamy reads do you recommend?

  1. I haven't read anything steamy....ummm...ever, but I've heard not great things about this book either! It's all about the hype I guess!

  2. Just on the second book now, and i agree with all of your points about the writing and the inner goddess for sure! I found aging the characters about 10 years and turning Christian into Batman made it more readable for me :) But I think your last comment really gets to the point of the craze over these books, there aren't enough steamy reads out there! So I hope this one starts a trend and some more well written ones are yet to come ...

  3. I've read the first book and was disappointed as well!

I found the book to be very poorly written and the plot very pitiful!

I honestly have no idea what the huge hype is about - Christian was emotionally/mentally abusive and controlling. Wow, that's not something that seems hype worthy to me.. Very sad indeed.

I have no desire to read the rest of the series either..
